Just as Time Magazine named Barack Obama Person of the year, media mogul Oprah Winfrey has been named as the '2008 Person of the Year' by animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
The major animals-rights organization said Oprah uses her fame to help the less fortunate (including animals) and expose instances of animal cruelty.
She has used her talk show and spotlighted puppy-mill abuses and poor conditions for animals on factory farms. She also encouraged a guest to give up meat for a vegan diet.
Previous winners of the PETA award include U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia in 2007 and the founders of the San Francisco-based cleaning product company Method in 2006.
